Turbidity
Definition
Turbidity is the cloudiness of water caused by suspended sediment particles. It is a regulated parameter during any dredging operation in Florida waters.
What it means in practice
Dredging permits include specific turbidity limits — measured in Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU) — that must be met at defined points downstream of the work. Silt curtains, controlled dredge rates, and tide-window scheduling are all techniques used to keep turbidity within permitted limits.
Why it matters to you
Excess turbidity can trigger permit violations, fines, and work stoppages. Asking how a project plans to manage turbidity is a quick way to gauge whether the team understands the regulatory environment.
