Environmental Resource Permit
Definition
An ERP is FDEP's primary permit framework for any construction that affects Florida's wetlands, surface waters, or stormwater systems.
What it means in practice
ERPs come in multiple categories — standard general permits for routine work, individual permits for larger or unusual projects, and noticed general permits for specific predefined activities. Most residential dredging falls under a standard general permit, while large marina or commercial work requires an individual permit.
Why it matters to you
Knowing which ERP category your project falls under determines both the cost (individual permits cost more and take longer) and the level of environmental review required. Identifying the right category up front can shorten a project timeline by weeks.
