Silt Curtain
Definition
A silt curtain is a floating fabric barrier deployed around a dredging worksite to contain suspended sediment and minimize turbidity beyond the immediate work area.
What it means in practice
Silt curtains are required by most FDEP and USACE permits during dredging operations. The curtain hangs from a floating boom, with a weighted bottom that contacts or rests near the sediment. Most permits specify Type II silt curtains, which extend to the bottom in shallow water and to a specified depth in deeper water.
Why it matters to you
Silt curtain deployment is a permit requirement, not an optional add-on. A proposal that doesn't include it is either missing scope or pricing incomplete. Ask whether silt curtain rental, deployment, and removal are itemized.
