Mechanical Dredging

Definition

Mechanical dredging removes sediment using physical excavation equipment — typically a clamshell bucket, excavator, or dragline mounted on a barge.

What it means in practice

Mechanical dredging is well-suited to compact sediments, debris-laden bottoms, and tight spaces where a hydraulic dredge cannot operate. The removed material is loaded directly into a barge or scow for transport to a disposal site. Compared to hydraulic dredging, mechanical dredging produces a smaller volume of waste but creates more localized turbidity during operation.

Why it matters to you

Most residential canal dredging in South Florida is mechanical — it's the right tool for the typical sediment types and basin sizes here. Understanding the method helps you ask the right questions about scheduling, neighbor impact, and disposal logistics.
